Passage of NRO Will Be A Stigma On Parliament: Nisar

By Media Monitor Desk

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in National Assembly and senior leader Pakistan Muslim League (N) Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan while declaring National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) promulgated by Former President Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf as a black law has said in unequivocal terms that its passage will be a stigma on the Parliament.

Addressing the news conference here at Parliament house on Friday, he said, the law committee itself is unconstitutional, and that the government is approaching PML-Q MNAs to garner support for the ordinance. He also pledged that the PML-N will oppose the NRO by all means possible. Nisar said all options were open, including approaching the Supreme Court against the controversial ordinance.

The PML-N stalwart also alleged that the government was trying to use the parliament in the same way former president Musharraf did. Echoing the PML-Q’s earlier demand, Nisar said the PML-N also demanded to know exactly who the beneficiaries of the NRO were.

Responding to criticism from the government, Nisar denied that Nawaz Sharif went into exile in 2000 under a deal. Sending of the NRO to National Assembly’s standing committee for law and justice was illegal, he said, adding that, Government is bulldozing the procedure of legislation by increasing its members in NA body.

He said he had sent a letter to Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza, demanding list of beneficiaries of the National Reconciliation ordinance but the she has not replied and now he has taken back the letter in a protest.

People involved in kidnapping, murder and other criminal cases got benefit through NRO which is a matter of grave concern and passage of such ordinance by the Parliament would create a dangerous situation, Nisar said.

NRO was against the constitution, he said. He went on to say government is building a safety wall in shape of NRO but it can not bear the burden of nation and opposition, Nisar warned. We have got no benefit from NRO and claims of Chief Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam (F) Moulana Fazal-ur-Rehman were baseless, he said.

Former Premier Mian Nawaz Sharif did not go for exile in the year 2000 under a deal, he said while making it clear Moulana Fazal-ur-Rehman is master in changing his position for benefits. Fazalur Rehman got benefits in Musharraf regime and now he is trying to do the same with Zardari and every one knows him, he said.

Government has started Parliamentarians of different political parties for horse-trading, "If the government tried to pass NRO from Parliament in such a way, all options are open to us including the approaching Supreme Court," he said.

NRO was not discussed during meeting between Former Premier Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zadari because ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) knows we would not support it, he said while answering to a question.

Government, he said, has started contacting PML-Q MNAs to garner support for the ordinance. We have also started contact with political parties against NRO, he said.

He made it clear he has no differences with his Party Quaid Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif and reason behind non participation during Nawaz meeting with Zardari was his office as opposition leader.

President Asif Ali Zardari is playing role of Co-Chairman of Parliament instead of PPP and when he would behave like President then he would have no objection to meet him, he alleged.

Answering to a question, he said, his party would not support undemocratic way and if change comes through democratic way then he would support it.
